Kubátová, Klára ; Dvořák, Petr (advisor) ; Málek, Jiří (referee)
The decision of the Swiss National Bank from January 2015 to drop the exchange rate profit of the Swiss franc caused a significant shock to the financial market. The Swiss franc boost strongly influenced Poland because many of a mortgage loan was granted precisely in this currency. The goal of the MA thesis is to analyze the impact of the Swiss franc boost on the Polish commercial banks and to describe individual measures taken and solutions found in Poland. The introductory part deals with the beginning of the expansion of foreign currency loans not only in Poland but also in the greater context of Poland´s neighbouring countries. Furthermore, the Recommendation S is described in more detail. The second chapter contains analysis of loans development in Poland. Here, the Bank Millennium is used as an example to demonstrate the loan portfolio composition. The final part of this work talks about the Polish reaction to the change of the Swiss monetary policy and to the specifics of these provisions.
Switzerland as a Safe Haven: Does the Foreign News Matter?
Kühnl, David ; Brushko, Iuliia (advisor) ; Hayat, Arshad (referee)
David Kühnl, Bachelor Thesis Abstract This thesis investigates the relationship between financial news and Swiss franc exchange rate in the context of Switzerland being safe haven for European investors. We employ the ARMA-GARCH econometric model extended by our custom component called "Floating Returns" to estimate the reaction of the investors to particular financial news. We find out that the bad news lead to significant short-term appreciation of the Swiss franc. Furthermore, we find out that not only the real macroeconomic data but also the investors' expectations are important for exchange rate determination. Finally, our model quantify the reaction to the particular news depending on the expected values and the announced values. 1
The swiss franc as a reserve currency
Sabo, Roman ; Durčáková, Jaroslava (advisor) ; Doležal, Jiří (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the real and potential status of the swiss franc as a reserve currency. For this aim it compiles the present knowledge and opinions on the issues of foreign exchange reserves, their adequacy and reasons for possessing them. It further summarizes the advantages and disadvantages associated with issuing a reserve currency and the criteria it should satisfy. The swiss franc does not meet all the criteria. Relatively small size of Switzerland's economy undermines its potential to be used on the international scale. The current account and the balance of payments have been generating surpluses for a long time. The current exchange rate floor against the euro shows that Switzerland is not willing to suffer the negative aspects of issuing a reserve currency.
